Sony needs to forget about indies at E3
It's official, Sony's E3 presentation has now been dated and as usual it will be the last one on the Monday night. Now Sony fans can begin their countdown to the big show and get excited about all the new announcements that will inevitably be made. New games are a certainty, price cuts are a possibility, but there's one thing we want to see less of: Indies.
Don't get us wrong, we love a good indie title, and Sony's commitment to bringing a large library of indie games to the PlayStation 4 is commendable. These are the games that bring innovation, they challenge us and they often make us think in ways that the big blockbuster games simply don't.
But the PS4 has been on store shelves for six months now and we want to be excited. Where are the big system-sellers that inspire people to run to the shops and grab a new console? Killzone: Shadow Fall was a pretty mess, inFamous: Second Son didn't live up to expectations... We want to see a massive game that you can only get on the PS4. Maybe that means dedicating 10 minutes of the show to Uncharted 4, or something new that Guerilla Games is rumoured to be working on, who knows? Just give us something juicy.
Everyone knows Sony's stance on indies by now and it's definitely doing enough to support them. But too much of its Gamescom 2013 press conference was spent on the indie scene and it would be unfortunate if the same mistake was made this time round. This is the time to appeal to players who only part with their money for a select amount of games every year, and who will only be wowed by the biggest games from the biggest names.
So that's number one on our wish list, number two involves a certain Project Morpheus. Virtual reality gaming is definitely in the ascendancy and it will only get bigger over the next few years. There are two massive products coming soon for VR gaming; one of them is the Oculus Rift and the other is Sony's strangely named device. We want to see exactly what it's capable of, we want to see how committed Sony is to the technology and we want to see if it can be a dedicated gaming device or just a simple novelty.
Throw in some announcements for the Vita and Sony can expect to enjoy another successful E3 as it looks back on a year of remarkable success for the PlayStation 4.
