ArabicGamers E3 Awards - Best? Worst?
E3 2014 is drawing to a close and once again we've seen a delightful array of games that will get us excited well into 2015. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all had strong showings this year, while EA and Ubisoft gave us a look at some of the best third-party games we'll be playing soon.
Below are our awards for E3 2014.
Best game
Such a hard award to give, and there are so many we could have picked for this one. But, ultimately, we have to go with Sunset Overdrive. We've known about the game for over a year but now we're finally getting to see what it's all about, a plethora of colours and destruction and traversal and what looks to be insane fun. We can't wait to play.
Worst game
We were excited about Battlefield: Hardline when it was first announced, but looking at gameplay videos since, it just looks like an add-on for Battlefield 4. The cops and robbers premise is interesting but we worry this will be a carbon copy of previous Battlefields, just with a different skin.
Best trailer
Another very difficult category to judge, but we went with Dead Island 2 purely for the entertainment factor. Metal Gear Solid 5 and The Division were long, cinematic trailers and they were pretty good, but Dead Island was short and sweet and that's just what we want to see.
What starts out as a brisk jog on the beach ends up with helicopters crashing into buildings and zombies nibbling on whatever they can get their hands on. The music also gets a thumbs up from us.
Worst trailer
So technically Mass Effect 4 didn't get a trailer, but we did have to sit through two minutes of watching developers talk about it without revealing anything of interest, and that's why it picks up this award.
Best conference
Microsoft! Put your pitchforks away, they deserve it. Last year they were rightly abused for going about things the wrong way, but they made up for it this year by focusing purely on games, and there were some very good ones as well. Nintendo did well too, but really, are those first-party games going to shift many more Wii U consoles?
Worst conference
It has to be EA. After Microsoft had us on the edge of our seats for 90 minutes, EA came in and reminded everyone that most of its best games are coming out in 2015, if that. Mass Effect 4, the new Star Wars and a new game from Criterion were heavily featured, but it's so early in development that all that was shown was concept art. Thanks, EA.
Biggest surprise
Ubisoft saving Rainbow Six: Siege until the end was masterful, and probably the best and biggest surprise of E3. Gamers have been calling out for a tactical shooter for a long time now and Siege looks like it's going to fill that void. The Grim Fandango remake was also lovely news.
Least biggest surprise
A no-show for The Last Guardian. I remember when people were buying PlayStation 3 consoles for this, now we're well into 2014, the PlayStation 4 is out and there's still no sign of it. What's that about?
