Molyneux: Games Industry turned 'lazy'
The games industry has turned 'lazy' thanks to a long console cycle, according to English game designer Peter Molyneux.
Molyneux, who has worked on games such as Fable and Black and White, claimed a lack of new IP in previous years is down to developers waiting for the next generation consoles to arrive.
He told GamesIndustry that developers have "become so used to the console cycle, and in a way we've become lazy".
"Two years ago, developers were going to publishers and saying we'd like to do this [new IP]," said Molyneux. "And the publishers were saying, 'It's too late in the generation now.' The first time I heard that was about four years ago - it's ridiculous."
Molyneux is now working on a game titled Curiosity for iOS and PC, where players chip away at a giant cube until there is nothing left and the 'secret' is revealed.
He is pleased to be working on games for iOS, adding that the platform could overtake consoles in the near future.
"The hardware iteration of [the iPad] is every six months: not every six years, every six months.
"If we're not careful - and in fact this is highly probable - by the time that this generation finally comes out, which will probably be in about 14 months time, this little puppy might well be more powerful than the new consoles.
"That's just mad. And then six months after that it'll be even more powerful."
