Splinter Cell aiming to be 'monster game'
Splinter Cell: Blacklist is going to feature different types of gameplay as it aims to be a 'monster game'.
Many fans of the Splinter Cell series were underwhelmed with a gameplay demo of Blacklist at E3 2012, claiming it was moving further away from the stealth segments the franchise is known for.
Ubisoft's cinematic director for Blacklist, David Footman, said games are following Hollywood films as they aim to be bigger and better.
"There's definitely a lot of action in Blacklist, but I think it's also just a different game," he told Spong.
"Nowadays, all the AAA titles are going towards 'monster games'. It's like the Hollywood blockbusters of the summer - if you're not big, you're not going to make it. You're not going to get shown. One of the aspects of these 'monster games' is that there's lots of different types of gameplay, with lots of modes."
Footman added that even though there is a large amount of action in Blacklist, fans would still get a healthy amount of stealth play on top.
"But it's not strictly an action game. The lead designers are going to an incredible amount of pain to make sure that we have Ghost and action-orientated maps. So the player can choose how they want to navigate the maps.
"The game is definitely broader and deeper than any other Splinter Cell, and there's definitely a huge stealth component to it. It's just that nobody's seen it yet."
