Nintendo: Gamers want more than just pretty pictures
Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed the Wii U is leading its competitors when it comes to innovation.
Many developers doubt whether the Wii U will be able to keep up with the next-gen consoles once Microsoft and Sony launch new hardware.
Fils-Aime said that rivals would need to offer more than just better graphics to be successful.
"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," he told CNET.
"It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U and we will."
Fils-Aime also rejected the idea that Nintendo is launching the Wii U too early.
"For us, launching new systems is about bringing new consumer experiences to the marketplace and we're doing that with Nintendo Land and third-party publishers are doing it with games like ZombiU.
"For us, now is the right time to launch new hardware."
The Wii U goes on sale in Europe on 30 November. The console sold 400,000 units in its US launch week.
