Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn entering closed beta

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will enter closed beta today.

Those taking part in the beta for the redesigned Final Fantasy XIV will get to try out the new Full Active Time Events feature, allowing players to join randomly occurring events without joining a party.

Game director, Naoki Yoshida, has also defended the game's paid subscription model, saying there's no right or wrong and it depends on the quality of the game.

"I don't think there's a right or wrong for having a monthly subscription model or free-to-play model," Yoshida told PennyArcade.

"Games like The Old Republic and The Secret World, I don't say those games would've been more successful if they had been free-to-play, for example. The subscription model was unrelated to the success of the game."
