Capcom: Old franchises restrict us on next-gen

Capcom is preparing new IP for the PlayStation 4 because old franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil have to deliver a certain type of experience.

Capcom showed off a short trailer for a new IP, currently labeled Deep Down, during the PS4 reveal event last month.

Producer of the title, Yoshinori Ono, believes that creating a new IP for next-gen is easier because established brands are limited to consumer expectation.

"We wanted to be free to utilise the PS4's hardware capabilities and unique services without the constraints of working within an existing IP," he told MCV.

"Of course, the development experience we gain will put us in an even better position to bring our existing series to the console in a way that takes full advantage of its hardware and services."

Ono also admitted to being nervous about showing off Deep Down at such an early stage of development.

"I was honoured to be invited," he added. "At the same time, I was a little hesitant about showing off a game and engine that are still at such early stages of development; neither even has a final name yet."
