Motorstorm dev helped with DualShock 4 design
Motorstorm Apocalypse developer Evolution Studios had a big say in the design of the PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 controller.
The DualShock 4 was announced at the PS4 reveal event in February last month, featuring some significant changes over the DualShock 3 design.
Evolution Studios technical director, Scott Kirkland, said the developer had been working with Sony on the new controller since 2011.
"The control side of things has always been a really important thing for racing games," he told EDGE, "so we made sure that we got involved in the controller discussion very early on. I think this goes back to 2011."
The shape of the DualShock 4 and its gyro function were just a few of the things Evolution Studios provided feedback on.
"We were instrumental in securing the specific gyro components that [will] go in the DualShock 4, we had prototypes that demonstrated that the really high frequency gyros were the ones that allowed us to chuck the controller around like a steering wheel, and the ones that they were considering [meant] you had to rely on accelerometers to compensate for that.
"So we put a very compelling case forward to the guys in Japan, they listened and they're the components that are in the DualShock 4."
Evolution is currently working on PS4 launch title DriveClub.
