Nintendo has confirmed that only 160,000 Wii U consoles were sold between April and June of this year.

The platform holder revealed the figures as part of its quarterly financial results, and they continue to indicate that the new console is struggling to interest consumers.

Only 10,000 units were shifted in Europe, with Nintendo blaming the poor results on a lack of first-party games.

"For the Wii U system, we will attempt to concentrate on pro-actively releasing key first-party titles from the second half of this year through next year to regain momentum for the platform," said a Nintendo statement.

The likes of Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World and Wii Fit U were listed as titles that could inject some life into the system.

Nintendo also hopes to utilise the Miiverse better and reduce development costs for the Wii U.

Lifetime Wii U sales now stand at 3.61million units.

There was better news for the Wii system, as Nintendo revealed that it had sold 210,000 units for the quarter, pushing it over 100million lifetime sales since launching in 2006.
