Red Dead Redemption has been called one of Take-Two's "permanent" franchises by CEO Strauss Zelnick, suggesting a possible sequel to the Western action title.

The publisher traditionally leaves its franchises on the shelf for years so that games can receive the right amount of development time to bring something new to the table.

This means the likes of Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne could go years without new installments, but Zelnick said that the gaps between releases could be cut down in the next-generation.

"It's possible that we are going to find that developing for this next-gen will be more efficient, it's possible to find that it [will be] easier to develop for multiple platforms simultaneously [but] it remains to be seen," said Zelnick during a conference call.

"The bulk of our timing of releases though has been driven by making sure that we put out really great titles and making sure that we don't overwhelm audiences and burn out our franchises.

"And it's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Read Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilisation for example."

Last year it was revealed that Red Dead franchise sales were over 13million.
