Sony announce limited edition PS1 style PS4 console
Sony has announced it will be releasing a PS1 style PS4 in celebration of 20 years of Sony gaming.
The special edition PS4 will be limited to 12,300 units worldwide, a number that apparently reflects “the launch date of the original PS”, quite how, we’re not sure.
“The ‘PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition’ is a very special model that is reminiscent of the original PlayStation, which has inspired every other PlayStation platform launched in the past two decades. This limited edition PS4 offers a great sense of nostalgia to long-time PlayStation fans, while also providing a fresh experience to those who never picked up the original console,” said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
It’s not been confirmed when the console will be available for purchase, however you can expect it to come in a commemorative box with one DualShock 4 controller (with a 20th Anniversary pattern on the touch pad), a PlayStation Camera, and of course, the PlayStation itself which will be recoloured PlayStation grey.
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said those who were interested in getting their hands on one would have to get their orders in early on the PS Blog. He also asked those interested would benefit from watching the PlayStation Experience keynote “starting Saturday morning at 1000hrs PCT to learn more”.
For that final bit of nostalgia, and in addition to the retro colour scheme, the PS4 theme also plays the original PlayStation startup sound when you turn the system on.
