Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter claims that a reputable source at Sony has said that the new console is "essentially a PC".

In a report on Gamesindustry.biz Leadbetter states that the new console from Sony will move away from the conventional Cell architecture and the company is working closely with AMD on a new core processor (for you geeks that's the x86 processor).

Most recently the PSVita has taken advantage of this technology and Sony bosses seem to be so impressed that they want to implement the same architecture into the next generation of consoles.

Leadbetter also states the case citing the Vita as an example: "While PlayStation Vita may lack a stand-out killer app, I still think that it's set the bar in terms of overall quality and quantity over and above any console launch I've seen in over 21 years in the business. Extrapolating that same philosophy towards PlayStation 4 makes a PC-style approach to Sony's next console seem very likely indeed."

The question here though is whether or not there would be backwards compatibility for the console, as we saw when the PS3 launched, there was outrage when players couldn't play their old games.  Does this mean we can say goodbye to all our PS3 games?  Does it mean we might as well forget the PS console completely and just buy a better PC?  Whatever the case maybe, Sony does, and has been making its operation a lot more streamlined, and the Vita certainly is one of the best things the industry has produced in a while.
