Nintendo has moved to defend the Wii U price tag after suggestions that it was too expensive.

Many people, including Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, have claimed the upcoming console has been priced too highly at launch.

Nintendo of America's vice president of sales and marketing, Scott Moffitt, said the price has been justified after the large amount of pre-orders that have been placed.

"All I can say is that the response has been phenomenal and we're getting, especially in the higher priced deluxe set, that one's selling out incredibly quickly," Moffitt told GamesIndustry.

"That seems to indicate that the pricing's in a good spot and the proof is in the consumer response."

Moffitt also stated that Nintendo is better prepared for the Wii U launch than it was for the Wii, so supply shortages should be less common.

"On opening week we will have more systems on hand for the Wii U than we did for the launch of Wii.

"Our replenishments will be more frequent this holiday time than during the Wii launch."
