Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is to move into a new role within the company as Nintendo of America CEO.
Iwata is taking over from Tatsumi Kimishima, who himself is being promoted to general manager within parent company Nintendo Co. Ltd.
Nintendo claims that the changes are being made to support a more streamlined global strategy and enhance "organisational agility".
Nintendo of America president and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, will resume his role unaffected.
The news comes as Nintendo announced some disappointing Wii U sales earlier today, which revealed that the new console had only shifted 3.45million units worldwide.
