Sony has released firmware 2.0 for the PS4 SDK which gives developers much more control over their games and a whole host of new features and technology.

The SDK was detailed at the CEDEC event in Japan where Sony used slides to explain some of the key features and tech and reported by DualShockers.

The slides focused primarily on Share Play, Themes, YouTube and ShareFactory.

Share Play slides outlined the concept and reason behind the feature, with the slide simply stating “In my childhood, I experienced games gathered together at my friends house” with a red line underneath saying “Share Play has the goal of providing a similar experience over the network”. Which it doesn’t really, but we see where Sony are going.
The next slide outlines what Share Play does; allows gamers to invite each other to a Party over the internet and “participate in the same game”. The idea, Sony claims, is to promote the titles and make it easier for people to purchase the titles having had a taste of the action.

YouTube is now another outlet you can “share” your content to through the “share” button on your PS4 controller. And combining it with ShareFactory (a simple video editing app), Sony it seems, are hoping to create and mobilise their fans to promote the hardware and the games to other players.

There is also a whole host of other, developer-focused tools, such as AR Dynamic Lighting, UI interfaces and architecture enhancements to make it easier for developers to get the most out of the console - one of the reasons we learnt Gaijin Entertainment chose to go with PS4 - you can find more about that here.

For more information on the content and to find out more about the SDK and to see the slides in full go here. We’re currently trying to get a hold of someone at Sony to confirm the details and information.
